left Hotel Ibis Rodez at 9.30am Convenient hotel for easy walk in centre of town and good secure underground public parking just outside the door. Des you warned us that Ibis are small and yes it was but fine just for our one night stop. Very clean and comfortable.
Just near the town square in Rodez
Beautiful big Cathedral in the square, massive.
Inside this cathedral. We lit a candle inside the church for Jack Thompson who passed away on the 3rd June. Jack used to work in the bank and he and wife Bae were very good friends of my Mum and Dad. Fortunately we saw him just before we left and I could tell he was saying goodbye in a different way.
Another church in this town
Somewhere on the way. Looked so nice sitting up proud.
Our big moment approaching the Famouse Millau bridge. One of Petes highlights to see.
What a great structure.
Guess who..........
Looking down from the bridge over the town of Millau where the traffic used to wind its way through before the bridge.
Now on the bridge. Pete feeling a bit worried but we survived.
In fact you didn't even notice it was so high once you were on it as it had high railings making
you feel secure......
Beautiful wild flowers, poppies and little blue flowers not sure what they were. I think that we might now be in lavender country but not sure will find out more about the area when we go to the Big I tomorrow as we are here in St Remy for three nights so lots to see. We have based ourselves here in the middle of a triangle between Nimes, Arles and Avignon good for day trips.
Here's the beast and the new car. It arrived to us dirty after its trip trying to catch us up. Guess Pete will be out cleaning it soon.
THE MILLAU BRIDGE ,FRANCE
The Millau bridge is in Southern France and crosses the river Tarn in the Massif Cental mountains.
At 300m (984ft) it is the highest road bridge in the world, weighing 36,000 tonnes. The centre pillar is higher than the famour Eiffel Tower.
The bridge opened in December 2004 and is possibly one of the most breath taking bridges ever build. It appears to float like a cloud despite the fact that it has seven pillars, and it is one and 1/2 miles long. It towers above the Tan Valley. It was privately financed at the cost of 394 million Euros.
The aim is to cut the travelling time to Southern France ( removing bottle neck at Millau township), through completion of the motorway between Paris and the Mediterranean. It took only three years to complete.
Because of the height 900ft above the valley floor a new technique had to be developed as it was too too high to put in place with cranes. First the towers were built in the usual way, then the road was built on either side of the valley and rolled into position until it meet in the centre. This technique had never been tried before which proved to be very efficient.
