Went in and did Nice central today along the promenade and the climb to the top of the hill at the eastern end. Went down a few pedestrian alleys through shops just behind the waterfront road. Decided not to go into the old town area as just too big. We were just as happy down on the waterfront and really enjoyed our climb to the top of the hill. Jen you will be pleased as we didn't stop at the half way lookout, kept going to the top. Great views all over Nice town and down over the ports.
Nice airport is on a peninsular out from the coast line. The planes just keep coming in non stop. They sweep in around the coast line coming in really low in front of the beach. One has to decide what to watch the planes or the talent on the beach. Dave and the boys would love it. That's the planes I mean.
As you drive past the airport there would be a min. of 40 Lear jets all lined up in row just parked waiting for the rich to hop in. Amazing the money here and then there is the big boats in the harbour.
When you first arrive in a big area like this it is all a bit confusing but after a full day reading maps sorting out transport it all just falls into place and you know what you want to see and how to see it.
Where we are staying at Cagnes-su-Mer a suburb of Nice is about 15 minutes driving from the west of Nice central. When we went into town this morning we worked out it was better to take the car ,although everyone from home was telling us to catch the train. The trouble with the train is that it goes right into the back of Nice making it a long way to walk down to the coast where we wanted to spend our time. It was an easy drive from our hotel as we are one block back from the beach and the waterfront road goes right in to public parking behind the promenade. One straight drive. It cost a bit but it was so convenient. 3.50 Euro an hour. We were there for three hours continuous walking. Hot in the sun and I was drenched by the time we reached the top of the hill, that's not from rain just the heat. Everyone knows what I am like.
The promenade. Rows and rows of large Apartments and hotels.
Some beautiful old buildings. Top photo on the waterfront, bottom one block back.
A close up of the beach with all the stone. We went down to the beach at the bottom of our road when we got back and don't know how people get comfortable lying on rocks. They are hard to walk on as you roll your ankles. They need some sand from N.Z. We had our first swim in the Med. and it was freezing. Even PT went in which surprised me. Nice and deep and I was up to my neck about 4 or 5 m out. The water is so clear and I noticed after our swim you didn't feel the salt on you like NZ. It was like swimming in fresh water.
Around the corner at the east end looking back over the beach.
From the top of the hill looking over Nice. I zoomed in. It was further down than shows.
Top and bottom photos looking down over the port. Different angle from yesterdays photo.
Shows how high we climbed. No wander I got so hot but it was all worth it. Fabulous views.
Another shot of the beach and town from higher up the hill.
On our way down the hill. The stairs we climbed and many more above us. Really enjoyed it up there.
Half way down the hill looking over the beach and town.
This one was taken to show how low the planes were flying over the water along the beach front. Pete reckons they were about 400 to 500 feet.
On the way back to the hotel we checked out the trains for tomorrows trip to Monaco. The station is just a 4 min walk from our hotel so very handy. Decided it would be easier to train it rather than drive, so looking forward to our day which you will hear about tomorrow.
The clouds came in this afternoon and we could see that it was raining in the hills up behind us, but never reached the coast.
It sure is great having this five night stop and finding the area handy for getting around.
