Woke up to a lovely sunny day but unfortunately by the time we wasted most of the morning waiting for the information centre to open and catching up on washing the clouds moved in by the time we reached Avignon and even a little of rain when we reached Gordes.
Our hotel Mistral in St Remy De Provence. Our room is upstairs behind the swimming pool. And yes I went for a swim when we arrived yesterday, freezing but made me feel good after being on the road all day.
Pete having breaky out on the terrace.
A back street in our little village we are staying in for three nights St Remy
Main street in St Remy. Notice what a sunny morning it is .
An old water wheel it is still working.
The weather has changed to cloudy and we are now in Avignon so the photos from now on won't look bright. What a great old walled city. There is so much rock around in this area. It seems the city is built on rock and all the buildings made of lovely rock stones. It is magnificent. Very interesting city to see. Didn't think that I was going to enjoy it as much as we did.
Avignon has over five thousand years of history. Due to its strategic geographical location. It has long been a crossroads of cultures and exchange. Its known as the city of Popes.
Look at these narrow streets that most of these old towns have. Shows how they lived all those years ago not designed for cars and yet they do drive down them. Notice the beautiful cobbled stone roads. It gets quite tiring walking over them all the time. Very bumpy driving over them.
Loved this alley way. It shows how the city is built on rock, so interesting.
More alley ways. I just loved walking all around here. Great.
Palace of the Popes 14th century. In front is a large square with cafe's around it.
I was told by the info lady this morning that the lavender season didn't start until July/August. I was sad to hear as I knew that this was the area to see it. But I managed to fine some down by the river in Avignon. Looks lovely. Wish that the season had started as it would be everywhere.
This famous bridge which was build in the 12th century has somehow broken off half way across the river and leaving the other half still standing, and I haven't found the history behind this. Dave the boys might think this funny the bridge that goes no where. Great tourist attraction. You can walk to the end.
The front of one of these canal cruising boats and below is the back. We would think that it would be at least 100mt. long.At the back are all the cabins with sliding windows with a railing in front. No deck. What a way to travel Europe. No un-packing and packing up all the time. Unpack once and just relax. Sounds good to me. Just get off and explore the cities as you pass them.
We have now driven to Gordes and as you can see the rain has started.Nobody worries about using umbrellas except the Asians. This town is build way up high all sitting on rock foundations, amazing place.
Main square of Gordes.
This was amazing, this is how the town is built on rock everywhere. Wish the sun had been out.
Along the left of this picture are houses with their balcony protruding out from the rock edge. Don't think that I would sit out there to admire the view.
This is looking down the valley below. What a site, even if it is through the mist of the rain.
Well we have just been and brought a Pizza from along the road and ate it beside the pool under the umbrella that you can see in the first photo. This is also where I have to write my blog as our room doesn't hook up to Wi-Fi, as we are at the end of the block.
Another big day ahead of us tomorrow hope that the sun shines. This is our second night here and one more to go.
